https://www.art.co.uk/products/p13920258-sa-i2784742/vincent-van-gogh-starry-night-c-1889.htm I consider the “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh to be great art because I think it looks good and what makes it even more interesting is the fact that it is very deep and he is showing not only the scenery but also the atmosphere and it conveys to me how he probably felt while drawing/painting this picture. I don’t have many criterias the one criteria that I have for what makes great art is that it should look good.
http://www.notcot.org/post/46639/Beautiful-artwork-by-Agnes-Cecile/ It was hard for me to pick just one image that I considered "great art" because I find almost all art great art. To me, great art is any piece that the artist has clearly put work into and is proud of. Even if it is the ugliest piece of artwork in the world, it can still be great art because to the artist it's a masterpiece. Even though the image I chose probably has some meaning and thought behind it, for me that's not a requirement for great art. This image meets the criteria above because not only is it beautiful, but it also clearly had a lot of effort put into it.
I believe that Donatello’s sculpture; David, is considered to be “great art” for a variety of reasons. David is a bronze sculpture, so to create an anatomically correct human figure out of metal is already an impressive accomplishment. Even the pose he’s in and how he just steps on the head of Goliath conveys so much emotion. The story of David and Goliath is a well known one, and is often used as an allusion to underdog stories. So there is a certain relatability when looking at the sculpture. Furthermore, the Renaissance was an artistic revolution. So art from that time is considered valuable, important, and popular; even popularity of an artist can make the art itself great. Overall, David is considered to be a great piece of art for its historic value, relatability, and the effort and emotion in its creation.
"The Girl with the Pearl Earring" (or "Meisje met de parel") Johannes Vermeer, (c.1665) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d7/Meisje_met_de_parel.jpg
There is something about this portrait that captivates; Is she turning towards you or away from you? No one can agree. But what makes this painting so captivating, besides her ability to hold your undivided attention with only a soft gaze, is this unquestionable allure of Vermeer's subjects (characteristic of his works), that give a sense of intimacy while retaining their distance. The composition of his pieces invokes balance and harmony between every element and with "The Girl with the Pearl Earring", all of that is absent. Her eye contact-unwavering, steady, and the part of her lips (as if she is to say something), invites you to her gaze. Perhaps the absence of characteristics that define Vermeer's work is what is so alluring. Perhaps it is the gaze she undeniably holds. Art should inspire the sense of curiosity and encourage the view to delve deeper into the surroundings, however deep it may go. It should inspire thought and be a psychological aspect, in which "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" expertly does; taking the viewer from a passive onlooker, to an active observer-deducing clues and hints in the shadows for the (clearer) end result. Yet with such allure, and in the end, was the beginning-Who really knows? We may honestly never figure it out entirely; and maybe that is the most alluring truth of the entire piece: that we may not know the full portrait. (Emily Chiang)
https://instagram.com/p/BRE3I16Bu-y/ "Constructive Criticism" by Binchcity. To me great art is memorable. It makes you think and feel. That is what this image does for me. I really like the juxtaposition of the cosmic looking background and the relatable text. Ms.Binchcity really utilizes her medium to express her message in a new and fresh way. The message "I love and welcome constructive criticism(except if it remotely insinuates that i am not perfect in every conceivable way)" reminds me of the duality of adolescence. Though we are expected to act like adults(accepting constructive criticism), we are still attached to our childish habits(wanting to but being unable to accept constructive criticism). Even the piece itself demonstrates the duality of adolescence. Should this graphic be considered art or is it just some teenager messing around on MS Paint? (Samantha Bozorgzadeh)

In my opinion, a great piece of art not only captures attention by its looks but also through its meaning. Whether it conveys a particular event or emotion, if a painting can reach out and connect to someone at a deeper level, then it’s an example of great art. With that being said, I believe “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso is an artistic masterpiece. This huge painting catches your eye with its movement and chaos. It is not painted realistically, but in its odd shapes and asymmetry, it makes the tragedy of the bombing of Guernica very real. The style of this painting, at least in my opinion, is very unique and pretty. This painting is a perfect combination of historical significance and style, making it an example of great art.
The reason why I consider this to be great art is that it resonates with me. It is a nostalgic painting for me because my grandmother in Israel has a painting very similar in style and theme to this one in her living room where I would pass by it every summer going out the door of her house. My family (on my mother's side) always would get together and talk in the living room before we left to go back to the United States. Because of all of these factors this picture has a hard to describe quality to it which extends past the actual art piece (which in itself is quite good). https://thomaskinkade.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/moupar9.jpg -Yuval
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starry_Night#/media/File:Van_Gogh_-_Starry_Night_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg I picked a pretty famous piece, Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. I do think it's great art though because, for me at least, I get this feeling of peace when I look at it. My definition of great art is a creation that after looking, reading, or watching, makes you step back and have to take a moment to absorb it, to appreciate it. If the art makes you think not just about it but lets you see the world in a new way I consider it truly great art. Starry Night for some reason overwhelms me with a calm and warm feeling and helps me see the beauty of the darkness.
"Mona Lisa" by Leonardo da Vinci c. 1517 https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ec/Mona_Lisa%2C_by_Leonardo_da_Vinci%2C_from_C2RMF_retouched.jpg/687px-Mona_Lisa%2C_by_Leonardo_da_Vinci%2C_from_C2RMF_retouched.jpg
This is a great piece of art to me because it is often referred to as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world". It has survived more than 500 years. To me, any piece f art that is preserved, goes through a touch up process and sparks so much conversation into society years after it was originally created (like this one) is a great work of art. Anything that inspires people or makes them think a little deeper deserves that title.
To me, the definition of art is simply anything which makes an inpactful connection with the viewer; weather it be through the piece's emotion, power, or beauty. If the piece resonates with the viewer without them having to be told how to think about the piece itself, it is art in my mind. With this definition, the meaning is based around individual instances and interactions people have with pieces, it is a very personal definition. I firmly bevel that the definition of art should be individualized, you shouldn't be forced to believe something about a piece. With this in mind, The piece I chose stretches the norms of what art is usually depicted as, yet the piece speaks to me every time I watch it. The piece I chose is a film. The link below is the trailer for the film "The Green Mile", which is directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 6 part novel by Stephen King. Rather than putting the whole 3 hour movie, I thought the trailer would be suitable. When I first watched the film, having read the full novel, I thought there would be nothing that the movie could add to the emotion the book first gave to me, but boy was I wrong. I have seen the film now well over 10 times, yet the emotion I get from watching it has never lessened due to the repetition. The heart wrenching penetration this film has on the viewer is so immense- I get emotional every time I watch it. This is truly art in my mind.
https://m.imgur.com/gallery/ooJwU I think that “Starry Night” by Vincent Van Gogh is an example of great art work because it fits my criteria of having passion behind it. Van Gogh painted this piece while he was in an insane asylum and if you take that into account you can really see a lot more meaning behind this already beautiful painting.
This is one of many examples of what I would consider great art. “Great art” should mainly be identified as something that the artist out a lot of their time and effort in, weather if it’s realistic or cartoony. In my opinion, I like art that is what other people may consider unusual. Usually, when i’m at an art gallery I see a lot of portraits of people and landscapes and that can get boring after 30 minutes of looking. A lot of people have their own definition of “great art” and a lot of people are gonna have their own opinion when it comes to critiquing art. Not everyone is going to love certain artists or certain artwork.
For me this is great art. It displays great skill in the detail of the painting. Beyond the actual skill it takes to paint it it also says more about society at the time. It was painted by Diego Valesques for the Spanish king. It shows on of Spain’s most important military victories. What is different about this painting is that normally when you defeated your enemy you would shame them and revel in your victory. This painting depicts the Spanish treating their enemies with diginity and treating them with respect.
https://www.straight.com/files/olddays/popup/public/files/images/wide/ART_Olio2_2231_2.jpg I consider great art to be a lot of things, whatever you're "feeling" or whatever "speaks to you". As of now, I really like the redesigns of the "mucha" pieces from the 1800s into music posters from the 1960s. I think they're fun to look at and I love the color schemes. Its an interesting way to blend music and visual art together. Personally, I think art is supposed to make you feel better and maybe put a smile on your face. These posters meet that criteria (for me) because I find them calming and they make me smile.

What I consider great art is art that is extremely well known such as the Mona Lisa. It is known by everyone, therefore its great art. Art that not everyone knows of wouldn't be considered great art in my opinion, however it can still be good! I also consider great art a piece that connects to the viewer. This means that if the viewer feels the emotions of the painting, understands the meaning, etc. This could be considered great art in their mind, however this means that not everyone will consider great art the same way. We all think of great art differently, and this is what I consider great art.
